General information

The Pinecone Soldierfish, Myripristis murdjan, is a nocturnal species known for its striking appearance and unique behaviors. It has a deep red to maroon body with large, reflective eyes adapted to low light conditions. The name 'Pinecone' comes from the distinctive pattern of scales that resemble a pinecone's surface.

This species is relatively hardy and can be a good choice for fish-only or larger reef aquariums. They are generally peaceful but may eat smaller fish or invertebrates that fit into their mouths.

Care

Pinecone Soldierfish require an aquarium with plenty of hiding places and a dimly lit environment to mimic their natural habitat. They are not particularly demanding regarding water quality, but stable conditions are essential for their well-being. They are carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet of meaty foods like shrimp, squid, and prepared frozen foods.

Reproduction

In the wild, Pinecone Soldierfish spawn in groups, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column. In the home aquarium, breeding is rare, but providing a stress-free environment with ample space may encourage spawning behavior.

Symbiosis

While not known for specific symbiotic relationships, Pinecone Soldierfish often share their hiding spots with other nocturnal creatures and may coexist with larger, non-aggressive invertebrates.

Habitat

Myripristis murdjan is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Line Islands and Tuamotu Archipelago, north to southern Japan, and south to New Caledonia. They inhabit coral reefs and rocky outcrops, typically at depths of 1 to 20 meters, where they hide during the day and emerge at night to feed.
