Common name: Catsharks

Scientific name: Scyliorhinidae

Scyliorhinidae, commonly known as catsharks, is a diverse family of sharks characterized by their elongated, cat-like eyes and patterned bodies. They are generally small to medium-sized and found in temperate and tropical seas worldwide. Catsharks are bottom-dwellers, often found on the continental shelf or slope. Many species lay distinctive egg cases known as 'mermaid's purses'. In the aquarium, they require large tanks with plenty of hiding spaces and a sandy substrate to mimic their natural habitat. They are not commonly kept due to their size and specialized needs, but some hobbyists with the capacity to provide for their requirements enjoy their unique appearance and behavior.
