Genus

Common name: Upside-down Jellyfish

Scientific name: Cassiopea

Cassiopea, commonly known as the Upside-down Jellyfish, is a genus of jellyfish found in warmer coastal regions around the world. Unlike most jellyfish, Cassiopea rests upside-down on the sea floor and contains symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae within its tissues. This unique relationship allows the jellyfish to photosynthesize, supplementing its diet. In the aquarium, Cassiopea requires a sandy bottom and low to moderate water flow to mimic its natural habitat. It's important to note that while generally peaceful, they can sting if disturbed, so caution is advised when handling.
