Genus

Common name: Moray Eels

Scientific name: Muraena

Muraena is a genus of moray eels found in warm and temperate seas. These elongated fish are known for their impressive set of teeth and secretive nature, often hiding in crevices within the reef. Moray eels have a unique hunting technique involving a second set of jaws called pharyngeal jaws, which help them secure and swallow prey. In the aquarium, they require large tanks with plenty of hiding spots and a secure lid to prevent escape. Their diet should consist of meaty foods like fish, squid, and shrimp. While fascinating, they can be aggressive and are not recommended for reef tanks with small fish or invertebrates.
