Common name: Blackspotted puffer
General information
The Blackspotted Puffer, Arothron nigropunctatus, is a distinctive and charismatic species known for its unique appearance and behavior. This pufferfish is easily recognized by its large, expressive eyes, and its body is covered with black spots against a yellowish background. It is capable of inflating its body as a defense mechanism when threatened.
In the wild, Arothron nigropunctatus is a solitary species, but it can become quite personable in captivity, often recognizing and interacting with its caretaker. It's important to note that pufferfish possess a potent neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin, in their organs and skin, which is a defense against predators.

Care
Blackspotted Puffers require a spacious aquarium with plenty of room to swim and explore. They are not reef-safe as they have a tendency to nip at and eat various invertebrates and some corals. A fish-only or species-specific tank is recommended. These puffers are voracious eaters and prefer a varied diet including mollusks, crustaceans, and other meaty foods.
Regular water changes and a well-maintained filtration system are essential to keep the water quality high, as pufferfish can be sensitive to poor water conditions. It's also important to provide them with hard-shelled food items to help wear down their ever-growing teeth.
Reproduction
Reproduction of Arothron nigropunctatus in the home aquarium is rare and not well-documented. In the wild, they engage in a unique courtship display and are known to release their eggs and sperm into the water column where fertilization occurs externally.
Habitat
The Blackspotted Puffer is found in warm, tropical waters across the Indo-Pacific region. They prefer shallow, coral-rich areas and are often seen around lagoons and seaward reefs. They can adapt to a range of salinities, often venturing into brackish water estuaries.
