General information

The Lyretail Hogfish, Bodianus anthioides, is a vibrant and active fish that adds both color and dynamism to a saltwater aquarium. Care

Lyretail Hogfish are considered moderate to care for. They require a larger tank due to their size and active swimming behavior, with plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic their natural habitat. They are not reef-safe as they may prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans. A varied diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and prepared marine foods will help maintain their health and coloration.

Reproduction

In the wild, Bodianus anthioides exhibits protogynous hermaphroditism, where individuals start life as females and can change to males as they mature. In the aquarium, breeding is not commonly observed, and there is limited information on their reproductive behavior in captivity.

Habitat

The Lyretail Hogfish is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the central Pacific. They are typically associated with coral reefs and rocky substrates, often at depths ranging from 1 to 70 meters. In the wild, they are solitary or found in small groups, usually in areas with abundant coral growth and clear waters.
