Common name: Black-blotched porcupinefish
General information
The Black-blotched Porcupinefish, scientifically known as Diodon liturosus, is a distinctive and charismatic species that captures the attention of many aquarists. This fish is known for its ability to inflate its body as a defense mechanism against predators. When threatened, it can take in water or air to increase its size dramatically, displaying its long spines that deter potential threats. The body of Diodon liturosus is covered with black spots and blotches, which can vary in intensity and provide camouflage among the reef.

Care
Caring for a Black-blotched Porcupinefish requires a spacious tank due to its potential size, reaching up to 65 centimeters in length. They are not reef-safe as they may nibble on or damage corals and invertebrates. A fish-only tank with plenty of hiding places and room to swim is ideal. They are generally peaceful but may be aggressive towards smaller fish or conspecifics. A varied diet of meaty foods, including shrimp, squid, and fish, is essential for their health.
Reproduction
In the wild, Diodon liturosus engages in a unique spawning behavior where males and females release gametes into the water column, resulting in external fertilization. Little is known about their breeding habits in captivity, and successful breeding is rare in home aquariums.
Habitat
The Black-blotched Porcupinefish is found in tropical and subtropical oceans around the world. They prefer reef environments, often seen in lagoons and seaward reefs. They can be found at depths ranging from shallow waters to over 50 meters deep. Their distribution includes the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Central Pacific.
