Care
Variegated Cardinalfish are suitable for both nano and larger reef aquariums due to their small size and peaceful nature. They thrive in well-established tanks with plenty of hiding places and a peaceful community. These fish are not aggressive and can be kept with other non-predatory tank mates. They prefer dim lighting and a gentle water flow. A varied diet of small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood will help maintain their health and coloration.
Reproduction
Like many cardinalfish, Fowleria variegata is a mouthbrooder. The male will incubate the eggs in his mouth until they hatch, which provides protection for the developing fry. This fascinating reproductive behavior can sometimes be observed in the home aquarium, offering a unique spectacle for the aquarist.
Habitat
The Variegated Cardinalfish is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, and from the Ryukyu Islands to New Caledonia and the Austral Islands. They typically inhabit coral reefs and lagoons, often hiding in crevices or among coral branches at depths ranging from 1 to 30 meters.
