General information

The Sebae Anemone, scientifically known as Heteractis malu, is a species of sea anemone that is popular among reef aquarium hobbyists for its striking appearance and its ability to host clownfish. It is characterized by its typically light coloration, ranging from white to pale tan, with purple tips on its tentacles. This anemone is often confused with its relative, the Heteractis crispa, but can be distinguished by its shorter and more numerous tentacles.

Care

Heteractis malu requires a well-established aquarium with stable water conditions and moderate to strong lighting to thrive. It prefers a sandy substrate where it can anchor its base and ample space to expand its tentacles without being disturbed by other tank inhabitants. This anemone benefits from occasional feedings of meaty foods such as shrimp or fish.

Reproduction

In the wild, Heteractis malu reproduces both sexually and asexually. In the aquarium, asexual reproduction through pedal laceration is more common, where pieces of the base detach and develop into new anemones. Sexual reproduction is rare in captivity but can occur with the release of gametes into the water column.

Symbiosis

The Sebae Anemone is known for its symbiotic relationship with several species of clownfish, including the popular Amphiprion ocellaris and Amphiprion clarkii. The anemone provides protection with its stinging tentacles, while the clownfish offers food scraps and enhances water circulation around the anemone.

Habitat

Heteractis malu is found in the Indo-Pacific region, typically in shallow lagoons and on reef slopes. It prefers areas with moderate water flow and access to bright light, which supports the photosynthetic algae, zooxanthellae, living within its tissues.
