Care
The Pink and Gold Damselfish is a hardy species that can be a good choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They thrive in a well-established aquarium with stable water conditions and plenty of hiding spaces. These fish are generally peaceful but can become territorial with their own kind, so it's advisable to keep them singly or in a mated pair.
They accept a variety of foods including small pellets, flake foods, and frozen or live brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Consistent feeding routines and a balanced diet will help maintain their vibrant colors and overall health.
Reproduction
Like many cardinalfish, Ostorhinchus margaritophorus is a mouthbrooder. The male will incubate the fertilized eggs in his mouth until they hatch, providing protection from predators. This fascinating reproductive behavior can sometimes be observed in the home aquarium if the environment is conducive to breeding.
Habitat
The Pink and Gold Damselfish is found in the Western Pacific, from Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef and north to the Ryukyu Islands. They prefer coral-rich areas and lagoons, often found at depths ranging from shallow waters to about 30 meters.
In the aquarium, replicating their natural environment with live rock formations and corals can provide them with the necessary shelter and comfort they need to thrive.
