General information

The Whitesaddle Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus ciliatus, is a distinctive and attractive species popular among saltwater aquarium enthusiasts. Characterized by its white body and a prominent yellow to gold saddle across its back, this goatfish is not only beautiful but also an interesting addition to a reef or fish-only aquarium due to its unique foraging behavior.

Goatfish are known for their pair of chin barbels, which they use to sift through the substrate in search of food. This behavior can be fascinating to observe but also serves a practical purpose in the aquarium by turning over the top layer of sand, which helps to prevent the buildup of detritus and aerates the substrate.

Care

Whitesaddle Goatfish require a spacious tank with a sandy bottom to accommodate their natural foraging behavior. They are generally peaceful but can be a threat to small shrimp and other tiny invertebrates due to their predatory nature. A varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and marine fish flesh will keep them healthy and maintain their vibrant coloration.

Reproduction

In the wild, goatfish are known to spawn in groups, releasing their eggs and sperm into the water column. However, breeding Whitesaddle Goatfish in captivity is quite challenging and not commonly achieved by hobbyists.

Habitat

Parupeneus ciliatus is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago. They prefer coral reef environments and are often observed at depths ranging from 1 to 70 meters, where they swim over sandy bottoms and reef slopes in search of food.
