General information

The Manybar Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus multifasciatus, is a striking and active species that adds both color and dynamism to a saltwater aquarium. This species is known for its distinctive coloration, with multiple vertical bars across its body and a pair of long, whisker-like barbels under its chin, which it uses to sift through the substrate in search of food.

Care

Manybar Goatfish require a spacious tank with a sandy bottom to accommodate their natural foraging behavior. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial with their own kind or similar species. A varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and marine fish flesh is essential for their health and well-being.

Reproduction

In the wild, Manybar Goatfish are known to form spawning aggregations, but breeding them in captivity is challenging and rarely achieved by hobbyists. Their reproductive behavior includes elaborate courtship displays and synchronized swimming during spawning.

Habitat

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Manybar Goatfish are commonly found in coral reef environments and sandy areas adjacent to reefs. They are active swimmers and can often be seen foraging in the sand during the day.

Geographical distribution includes areas from East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Ducie islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands.
