Common name: sidespot goatfish

Scientific name: Parupeneus pleurostigma (Bennett, 1831)

General information

The Dash-and-dot Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus pleurostigma, is a colorful and active species that adds both beauty and intrigue to a saltwater aquarium. This species is known for its distinctive coloration, with a white body marked by a diagonal brown band and a series of orange dashes along its side, which gives it its common name.

Goatfish are unique in their use of barbels, which are whisker-like organs located under their chin. These barbels are used to detect and dig out prey from the substrate, making them fascinating to watch as they forage through the sand.

Care

The Dash-and-dot Goatfish requires a spacious tank with a sandy bottom to accommodate its natural foraging behavior. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial with their own kind, so it's best to keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is large enough to support a group with ample space for each individual.

A varied diet is crucial for their health, including meaty foods like shrimp, squid, and marine fish flesh. They also appreciate live foods, which can stimulate their natural hunting instincts.

Reproduction

In the wild, Dash-and-dot Goatfish are known to form spawning aggregations, but breeding them in captivity is quite challenging and not commonly done by hobbyists. Their reproductive behaviors are not well-documented in home aquariums.

Habitat

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, the Dash-and-dot Goatfish can be found in a variety of marine environments, from shallow lagoons to coral-rich outer reef slopes. They are typically found at depths ranging from 1 to 70 meters, where they swim over sandy bottoms and coral reefs in search of food.
