General information

The Goldstripe Goatfish, scientifically known as Parupeneus spilurus, is a vibrant and active species that adds both color and dynamism to a saltwater aquarium. This species is known for its distinctive yellow stripe that runs along the length of its body, complemented by a white base color and hints of pink and orange. Goatfish are unique in their use of a pair of chin barbels to sift through the substrate in search of food, which can be a fascinating behavior to observe.

Care

Parupeneus spilurus requires a spacious tank with a sandy bottom to accommodate their natural foraging behavior. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial with their own kind, so it's best to keep them singly unless the tank is large enough to support a group with ample space for each individual. A varied diet of meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and marine fish flesh will keep them healthy and their colors vibrant.

Reproduction

In the wild, Goldstripe Goatfish are known to form spawning aggregations, but breeding them in captivity is quite challenging and not commonly achieved by hobbyists. Their reproductive behaviors are not well-documented in home aquariums.

Habitat

The natural habitat of the Goldstripe Goatfish includes sandy bottoms and coral reefs where they can be found at depths ranging from shallow waters to about 100 meters. They are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands and the Tuamotu Archipelago.
