Care
Streaked Spinefoot requires a spacious tank with plenty of swimming space and a variety of live rock formations for grazing and refuge. They are herbivorous and their diet should consist mainly of marine algae and vegetable matter. Supplementing with high-quality dried seaweed or algae-based pellets will help maintain their health and coloration. It's important to note that they have venomous spines, so caution should be exercised when handling or performing tank maintenance.
Reproduction
In the wild, Siganus javus forms large schools and spawns in open water. The eggs are pelagic, drifting with the currents until hatching. Breeding them in captivity is challenging and rarely achieved by hobbyists. However, understanding their natural breeding behavior can be beneficial for those interested in marine fish propagation.
Habitat
The Streaked Spinefoot is found in a variety of shallow coastal habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove areas. They are distributed across the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Philippines, north to Japan, and south to Australia. In the aquarium, replicating a similar environment with a mix of open swimming areas and structured hiding places can help mimic their natural habitat.
