Common name: Colonial Tunicates

Scientific name: Clavelinidae

Clavelinidae is a family of small, colonial tunicates or sea squirts belonging to the subphylum Tunicata. These fascinating marine invertebrates are known for their vibrant colors and translucent bodies, which can add a unique aesthetic to a marine aquarium. The family includes several genera, with Clavelina being one of the most recognized. Clavelinids are sessile organisms that attach themselves to substrates like rocks, coral, and other hard surfaces in shallow waters.

One of the most striking features of Clavelinidae is their colonial nature. Each colony is composed of numerous individual zooids that are interconnected by a common tunic. This colonial lifestyle allows them to efficiently filter feed, drawing in water through their incurrent siphons and expelling it through excurrent siphons. This feeding mechanism helps maintain water quality in their environment, making them beneficial for reef aquariums.

In terms of care, Clavelinidae require stable water conditions with moderate flow to ensure proper feeding and waste removal. They are sensitive to poor water quality and require regular monitoring of parameters such as nitrate and phosphate levels. These ascidians thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock to provide attachment surfaces and natural filtration.

While Clavelinidae can be a visually appealing addition to a marine aquarium, they are not recommended for beginners due to their specific care requirements and sensitivity to changes in water conditions. Hobbyists interested in keeping Clavelinidae should have experience in maintaining stable marine environments and be prepared to provide the necessary care to keep these delicate organisms healthy.
