Common name: Wire Coral

Scientific name: Melithaeidae

Melithaeidae, commonly known as Wire Corals, are a family of gorgonian octocorals known for their unique, wire-like branching structures. They are found in a variety of colors, often vibrant, and can add a dynamic element to a reef aquarium. Unlike stony corals, they have a flexible skeleton made of a protein called gorgonin. They host a variety of marine life, including certain species of commensal shrimp. Care should be taken to provide moderate to strong water flow and low to moderate lighting to mimic their natural deep-water habitats.
