Common name: Blue-green algae

Scientific name: Oscillatoriaceae

Oscillatoriaceae is a family of filamentous cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. They are photosynthetic and can be found in a variety of marine environments. In reef aquariums, they are often considered pests, as they can overgrow and smother corals and other invertebrates. However, some hobbyists cultivate them in refugiums for nutrient export. They require management to prevent overgrowth, typically through manual removal, nutrient control, and promoting competition with other algae.
