Genus
Common name: Sponge Coral
Scientific name: Melophlus
Melophlus is a genus of azooxanthellate sponges commonly known as Sponge Corals due to their hard, calcium carbonate skeletons which resemble those of stony corals. They are found in a variety of marine environments and can add a unique structure to a reef aquarium. Unlike true corals, they do not host symbiotic algae and therefore do not require intense lighting, making them suitable for areas in the tank with lower light conditions. They are filter feeders and need a supply of fine particulate organic matter to thrive.
