Genus

Common name: Cowtail Stingray

Scientific name: Urogymnus

Urogymnus is a genus of stingrays in the family Dasyatidae, commonly known as the cowtail stingray and mangrove whipray among others. These rays are characterized by their unique tail shapes and are found in the Indo-Pacific region. They are benthic creatures, often inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal waters, estuaries, and mangroves. Urogymnus species are not common in the aquarium trade due to their large size and specialized care requirements. They are fascinating creatures with a flattened body adapted for life on the sea floor, where they often bury themselves for camouflage.
