Common name: Isopods
Scientific name: Isopoda
Isopods are a diverse group of crustaceans found in various marine environments. In reef aquariums, they are often seen as beneficial scavengers, consuming detritus and uneaten food, thus helping to maintain water quality. Some species, like the parasitic Cymothoa exigua, are not suitable for aquariums, but many others, such as small, reef-safe isopods from the genus Paracerceis, can be a part of the clean-up crew. They are generally hardy and can adapt to a range of conditions, but should be introduced to established tanks with plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing.
