Care

Citrinellus Butterflyfish are considered moderate to care for. They require a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. This species is not considered reef-safe, as it may nip at soft and stony corals, as well as sessile invertebrates. A varied diet of meaty foods, including marine fish, crustacean flesh, and mysis shrimp, is essential for their health.

Reproduction

Breeding Citrinellus Butterflyfish in captivity is quite challenging and rarely successful. In the wild, they are pelagic spawners, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column where fertilization occurs. The larvae are planktonic and go through several stages before settling down and transforming into juveniles.

Habitat

The Citrinellus Butterflyfish is native to the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands, and from southern Japan to New Caledonia. Typically found in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs, they can be seen at depths ranging from shallow waters to about 30 meters.

Their natural habitat includes a variety of reef structures, which provide both food and shelter. In the aquarium, replicating this environment with ample live rock and space for swimming is beneficial for their well-being.
