Care

Ornate Butterflyfish require a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. They are not considered reef-safe as they have a tendency to nip at stony and soft corals, as well as anemones and polyps. A varied diet is crucial for their health, including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods.

Reproduction

In the wild, Ornate Butterflyfish form monogamous pairs during the breeding season. They are pelagic spawners, releasing their eggs and sperm into the water column where fertilization occurs. The eggs are buoyant and dispersed by currents. In the aquarium, breeding is rare and challenging due to the difficulty in mimicking natural spawning conditions.

Habitat

Chaetodon ornatissimus is found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Ducie islands, north to southern Japan, and south to Lord Howe Island. They are typically seen in coral-rich areas of lagoon and seaward reefs from depths of 1 to 35 meters.

The Ornate Butterflyfish's natural habitat includes a variety of reef environments, where they are often observed in pairs or small groups. They are adept at navigating through complex coral structures in search of food and shelter.
