General information

The Azure Damselfish, Chrysiptera hemicyanea, is a vibrant and active fish that adds a splash of color to any reef aquarium. Known for its striking blue and yellow coloration, this species is a favorite among aquarists. The front half of the body and the head are a bright blue, while the back half is yellow, creating a sharp contrast that's easily noticeable even in a busy reef environment.

Native to the Western Pacific, the Azure Damselfish is often found in shallow, coral-rich areas and lagoons. It's a hardy species that can adapt to a variety of tank conditions, making it suitable for beginners. However, it's important to note that they can become territorial, especially in smaller tanks.

Care

The Azure Damselfish is relatively easy to care for. It thrives in well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories. While they are not picky eaters, a varied diet of meaty foods, algae, and high-quality commercial foods will help maintain their vibrant colors and overall health.

A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to provide enough space for these active swimmers and to minimize territorial aggression. Regular water changes and stable water parameters are essential for the well-being of this species.

Reproduction

In the wild, Azure Damselfish are known to be demersal spawners, laying their eggs on substrates where they are guarded and cared for by the male until they hatch. In the aquarium, breeding can occur if a stable pair is established, and the tank environment is well-maintained.

Habitat

The Azure Damselfish is commonly found in the Western Pacific, from Indonesia to Taiwan, and as far south as the Great Barrier Reef. They prefer shallow, coral-rich habitats and are often seen darting among the branches of stony corals and anemones in the wild.
