Care
Splendid Dottybacks are hardy fish that adapt well to life in captivity. They require an aquarium with plenty of rockwork and hiding places to feel secure. A minimum tank size of 55 liters is recommended. These fish can be aggressive towards other small, similarly shaped or colored fish, so careful consideration should be given when choosing tank mates.
They are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Consistent feeding and good water quality are essential for maintaining their vibrant colors and overall health.
Reproduction
In the wild, Splendid Dottybacks are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they are born female and can change to male if needed, usually in the absence of a dominant male. In the aquarium, breeding can be challenging due to their aggressive nature, but it is possible with a well-established pair in a species-specific tank.
Habitat
The Splendid Dottyback is typically found at depths ranging from 3 to 60 meters in the coral-rich areas of the Western Pacific. They prefer environments with plenty of live rock and coral where they can establish territories and find shelter from predators.
