General information

Marcella's Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Prognathodes marcellae, is a rare and striking species in the butterflyfish family. It is prized for its vibrant coloration and elegant swimming style. This species is distinguished by its deep yellow to orange tail, contrasting with a primarily white body and black vertical bands. The fish is named after Marcella Leone, founder of the Leone Animal Conservation Fund, which supports global wildlife conservation efforts.

Care

Prognathodes marcellae requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. It is a relatively peaceful species but can be territorial towards other butterflyfish. This species is not considered reef-safe as it may nip at stony and soft corals, as well as sessile invertebrates. A varied diet of meaty foods, including marine fish, crustacean flesh, and mysis shrimp, is essential for maintaining their health and coloration.

Reproduction

Little is known about the breeding habits of Marcella's Butterflyfish in the wild or captivity. Like many marine fish, they are likely broadcast spawners, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column for external fertilization.

Habitat

Prognathodes marcellae is found in the Western Atlantic, particularly around the reefs of Brazil. It is a deep-water species, typically found at depths ranging from 60 to 200 meters, which makes it less common in the aquarium trade due to the challenges associated with collecting fish from such depths.
