Common name: Regal parrot

Scientific name: Scarus dubius Bennett, 1828

General information

The Dusky Parrotfish, Scarus dubius, is a colorful and active species that can add both visual interest and ecological benefits to a marine aquarium. They are known for their ability to change colors and patterns throughout their life stages, which is a characteristic of the parrotfish family. Juveniles typically display different coloration compared to adults, with males often exhibiting the most vibrant hues.

Parrotfish play a crucial role in the health of coral reefs by grazing on algae that can otherwise overwhelm coral populations. Their beak-like teeth are adapted for scraping algae and dead coral, which they grind up with specialized pharyngeal teeth to digest the algae and excrete the coral as sand.

Care

Dusky Parrotfish require large, well-established aquariums with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. They are not suitable for small or nano tanks due to their size and activity level. These fish are best kept by experienced aquarists who can provide a varied diet that includes algae and marine-based plant matter to mimic their natural grazing behavior.

Reproduction

In the wild, Scarus dubius exhibits complex social and reproductive behaviors, including haremic group structures and spawning aggregations. In the aquarium, breeding is rare and challenging due to the need for precise environmental conditions and large tank sizes to accommodate their social structures.

Habitat

Dusky Parrotfish are found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea and East Africa to the central Pacific. They inhabit coral reefs and lagoons, often seen grazing on algae-covered substrates. They can be found at various depths, typically from shallow waters to about 30 meters deep.
