General information

The Dusky Damselfish, Stegastes adustus, is a small, robust fish known for its territorial behavior and adaptability to various marine environments. Care

Dusky Damselfish are hardy and can adapt to a range of conditions, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. However, their aggressive territorial behavior should be considered when adding them to a community tank. They require an aquarium with plenty of rockwork and hiding spaces to establish territories. A varied diet of meaty foods, algae, and high-quality prepared foods will help maintain their health and coloration.

Reproduction

In the wild, Dusky Damselfish are known to be substrate spawners, laying their eggs on flat surfaces where the male will guard and tend to them until they hatch. In the aquarium, breeding can occur if a stable pair is established, though raising the fry can be challenging due to their small size and specific dietary needs.

Habitat

The Dusky Damselfish is found in the Western Atlantic, from Florida and the Bahamas to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. They inhabit coral reefs and rocky areas, often in shallow waters but can be found at depths up to 55 meters (180 feet).
