General information

The Beaugregory, scientifically known as Stegastes leucostictus, is a small, robust damselfish that is popular among aquarists for its striking coloration and active behavior. This species is characterized by its deep blue to gray body with distinctive white spots on its sides, which become more pronounced as the fish matures.

In the wild, Beaugregory damselfish are known for their territorial nature, often defending their space against intruders. They are commonly found in shallow reefs and seagrass beds, where they feed on a variety of items including algae, small invertebrates, and detritus.

Care

Beaugregory damselfish are relatively hardy and can adapt to a range of aquarium conditions. They do best in well-established tanks with plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing. While they are generally peaceful, their territorial instincts can sometimes lead to aggression, especially in smaller tanks or towards similar-looking fish.

A varied diet is important for the Beaugregory, including high-quality marine flake food, frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods, as well as algae-based foods to mimic their natural diet.

Reproduction

In their natural habitat, Beaugregory damselfish are known to be substrate spawners, laying their eggs on flat surfaces where the male will guard and tend to them until they hatch. In the aquarium, breeding can occur but requires careful observation and management to ensure the well-being of both the eggs and the adult fish.

Habitat

Beaugregory damselfish are native to the Western Atlantic, ranging from Florida and the Bahamas to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. They are typically found in shallow waters, often in coral reefs or associated with seagrass beds, where they maintain a small territory.
