Common name: Brittle Stars
Scientific name: Amphiuridae
Amphiuridae is a family of brittle stars belonging to the class Ophiuroidea. These echinoderms are characterized by their long, slender arms which are distinct from their central disc. They are known for their ability to regenerate lost limbs and are an important part of the clean-up crew in reef aquariums, consuming detritus and uneaten food. Amphiuridae species are generally nocturnal and can be quite reclusive, hiding in crevices during the day. They are beneficial to the reef tank ecosystem, promoting a healthy balance by preventing the buildup of organic waste.
