Family

Common name: Sea Urchins

Scientific name: Brissidae

The Brissidae family encompasses a group of sea urchins known for their distinctive heart-shaped tests (shells) and a preference for infaunal living, often burrowing into soft substrates. These urchins play a role in the benthic ecosystem by aerating the substrate and are a unique addition to larger, mature reef or fish-only aquariums. They require ample space to roam and a sand bed for natural burrowing behavior. Their diet consists mainly of detritus and algae, but in an aquarium setting, they may need supplemental feeding with algae wafers or similar foods to ensure proper nutrition.
