Family

Common name: Nautilus

Scientific name: Nautilidae

The Nautilidae family, commonly known as Nautilus or Chambered Nautilus, includes cephalopods known for their distinctive coiled shells. These ancient creatures have remained relatively unchanged for millions of years. They inhabit deep slopes of coral reefs and are active primarily at night. Nautiluses are unique among cephalopods for having a buoyant, gas-filled shell that allows them to control their buoyancy. They feed on detritus and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, they require specialized care, including a deep, cold tank with minimal lighting and a diet that mimics their natural food sources.
