Acanthostracion is a genus of boxfishes commonly known as cowfish. These unique fish are recognized for their hexagonal plate-like scales, which form a rigid, box-like carapace. They are slow-moving and use their pectoral fins for propulsion. Cowfish are omnivorous, feeding on algae, sponges, and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, they require stable water conditions and plenty of space to swim. They are generally peaceful but can release toxins when stressed, which can be harmful to other tank inhabitants.
