Genus

Common name: Fern algae

Scientific name: Asparagopsis

Asparagopsis is a genus of red algae known for its distinctive feathery, fern-like appearance. It's a popular choice for refugiums due to its ability to absorb excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, helping to maintain water quality. Asparagopsis species, such as Asparagopsis armata and Asparagopsis taxiformis, can also produce a compound called bromoform, which has been studied for its potential to reduce methane emissions from livestock when used as a feed supplement. In the aquarium, it requires moderate lighting and water flow, and can be a useful indicator of nutrient levels, as its growth rate will vary accordingly.
