Genus

Common name: Chaeto

Scientific name: Chaetomorpha

Chaetomorpha, commonly known as Chaeto or Spaghetti Algae, is a genus of green macroalgae often used in saltwater aquariums for nutrient export. It grows in a filamentous and tangled mass, resembling a ball of green spaghetti. This algae is particularly valued for its ability to absorb excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphates, which can help reduce the likelihood of nuisance algae blooms. Chaetomorpha is easy to cultivate and can be kept in a refugium where it provides a habitat for beneficial microfauna. It is non-invasive and does not attach to rocks or substrate, making it easy to remove and prune as needed.
