Genus
Common name: Eleven-armed sea star
Scientific name: Coscinasterias
Coscinasterias is a genus of sea stars found in the southern hemisphere, particularly known for the species Coscinasterias calamaria. These sea stars are characterized by their multiple arms, usually eleven, but they can have as few as seven or as many as fourteen. They are opportunistic feeders, preying on a variety of invertebrates and are known for their ability to regenerate lost limbs. In the aquarium, they require a well-established tank with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. They can be sensitive to changes in water quality, so stable conditions are essential.
