Common name: Harlequin Shrimp

Scientific name: Hymenocera

Hymenocera, commonly known as Harlequin Shrimp, is a genus of strikingly patterned shrimp found in tropical reefs around the world. These shrimp are known for their specialized diet, feeding exclusively on starfish, including the crown-of-thorns starfish, making them unique in the marine aquarium hobby for pest control. They exhibit a fascinating behavior of flipping their prey over to feed on the softer underside. Harlequin Shrimp are relatively small, reaching about 5 cm in length, and are best kept in pairs. They require a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding places and a stable supply of their specific food source.
