Common name: Brittle Stars
Scientific name: Macrophiothrix
Macrophiothrix is a genus of brittle stars belonging to the family Ophiocomidae. These echinoderms are known for their long, slender arms which they use for locomotion and feeding. They are detritivores, consuming decaying matter and plankton. In the aquarium, they are beneficial as they help clean up excess food and detritus. They are nocturnal and often hide during the day. Macrophiothrix species are generally hardy and can adapt to a range of conditions, making them suitable for many reef aquariums.
