Genus
Common name: Brittle Stars
Scientific name: Ophiomyxa
Ophiomyxa is a genus of brittle stars, echinoderms that are closely related to starfish. Members of this genus are characterized by their long, slender arms which are used for locomotion and capturing food. They are nocturnal and often hide under rocks or within the substrate during the day. In the reef aquarium, they can serve as a clean-up crew, consuming detritus and uneaten food. They are generally hardy and can adapt to a range of conditions, but prefer stable environments with plenty of hiding places.
