Genus

Common name: Batfish

Scientific name: Platax

Platax, commonly known as Batfish or Spadefish, is a genus of fish in the Ephippidae family, notable for their distinctive body shape and bold patterns. These peaceful and somewhat shy fish are a favorite among aquarists for their unique appearance, which includes a laterally compressed body and long dorsal and anal fins. They are known for their juvenile form, which is more colorful and has elongated fins, making them look like leaves floating in the water. As they mature, their coloration becomes more subdued, and their fins shorten. Batfish are not reef safe as they tend to nibble on corals and invertebrates, but they can be a stunning addition to a large fish-only tank. They require ample swimming space and a varied diet of meaty foods and vegetables.
