Common name: scrawled filefish
General information
The Scribbled Filefish, scientifically known as Aluterus scriptus, is a unique and fascinating species that adds both character and intrigue to a marine aquarium. Known for its distinct, hieroglyphic-like scribbles and mottled coloration, this species can grow quite large, reaching up to 110 centimeters in length in the wild. Despite its size, it has a relatively peaceful demeanor but can be territorial with its own kind or similar-looking species.

Care
Caring for Scribbled Filefish in captivity requires a spacious tank to accommodate their potential size and swimming needs. They are not reef-safe as they have a tendency to nip at soft corals, sessile invertebrates, and clam mantles. A varied diet of meaty foods, including shrimp, squid, and fish flesh, is essential for their health. They can be shy initially but will become more bold over time, especially during feeding.
Reproduction
In the wild, Scribbled Filefish are known to spawn seasonally, releasing their eggs into the water column where they become part of the plankton. In the aquarium, breeding is rare, but environmental stability and a well-conditioned pair may encourage spawning behavior.
Habitat
Scribbled Filefish are found in a variety of marine environments, from shallow reefs to deeper waters up to 120 meters. They are often seen swimming alone or in pairs and are known to take refuge among Sargassum weeds. Their natural range spans across the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
