General information

The Pizza Anemone, scientifically known as Cryptodendrum adhaesivum, is a unique and visually striking species of sea anemone. It is often referred to as the Adhesive Sea Anemone due to its sticky tentacles that can adhere to various surfaces. This anemone is characterized by its large, flat oral disc that resembles a pizza, with a colorful array of tentacles that can vary from shades of brown, green, to vibrant purples and reds.

Care

Cryptodendrum adhaesivum requires a well-established aquarium with stable water conditions. It prefers a sandy substrate where it can anchor its base and ample space to expand its oral disc without being disturbed by other tank inhabitants. Moderate to strong lighting and water flow are essential to mimic its natural reef environment and promote healthy growth. Regular feeding with meaty foods such as shrimp or fish pieces will keep it nourished.

Reproduction

In the wild, Cryptodendrum adhaesivum reproduces both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction occurs through pedal laceration, where pieces of the base detach and develop into new anemones. Sexual reproduction involves the release of gametes into the water column for external fertilization. In the aquarium, asexual reproduction is more commonly observed.

Symbiosis

The Pizza Anemone is known for its symbiotic relationship with certain species of clownfish, particularly the @species:amphiprion-clarkii (Clark's Clownfish). These fish find refuge within the anemone's tentacles, gaining protection from predators. In return, the clownfish provide the anemone with nutrients through their waste and help with water circulation by their movements.

Habitat

Cryptodendrum adhaesivum is typically found in the Indo-Pacific region, from the Red Sea to the Western Pacific. It inhabits reef slopes and lagoons, often attaching itself to rubble or solid substrates in areas with moderate to strong water currents.
