Care

In the home aquarium, Periclimenes yucatanicus requires a well-established environment with plenty of live rock and hiding places. They are peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tank mates. These shrimps are scavengers and will accept a wide range of foods, including frozen, flake, and pellet diets, but they particularly appreciate small meaty foods.

Reproduction

Breeding Periclimenes yucatanicus in captivity can be challenging. They have a planktonic larval stage which requires specialized care to survive. The larvae need very fine food particles and stable water conditions to develop properly.

Symbiosis

The Spotted Cleaner Shrimp engages in a mutualistic relationship with fish, offering a cleaning service by removing parasites and dead tissue from their skin, gills, and mouth. This not only benefits the fish but also provides the shrimp with a source of food. They are often seen in cleaning stations where fish come specifically to be cleaned.

Habitat

Periclimenes yucatanicus is typically found in coral reefs and associated habitats in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and along the Atlantic coast of Central America. They often associate with sea anemones, sponges, and bivalves, utilizing them as a base for their cleaning stations.
