Common name: Mithrax Crabs

Scientific name: Mithrodiidae

Mithrax Crabs, commonly known as Emerald Crabs, belong to the family Mithracidae and are popular in reef aquariums for their algae-eating habits. These crabs are known for their green to dark green carapace and their ability to consume various types of algae, including bubble algae, which can be problematic in captive systems. They are generally peaceful and can coexist with most tank inhabitants, but may occasionally nip at small polyped stony corals or soft corals if not well-fed. They are nocturnal and prefer to have hiding places within the live rock.
