Common name: Brittle Stars
Scientific name: Ophiactidae
Ophiactidae, commonly known as Brittle Stars or Serpent Stars, are a family of echinoderms characterized by their long, slender arms which are distinct from their central disc. They are a diverse group with many species well-suited for reef aquariums, where they serve as scavengers and detritivores, helping to maintain a clean substrate. These nocturnal creatures are generally hardy and can adapt to a variety of tank conditions, but they do best in established tanks with plenty of hiding places and stable water parameters. They are not aggressive and can coexist with a wide range of tank mates.
