Genus
Common name: Burrfish
Scientific name: Chilomycterus
Chilomycterus is a genus of fish known commonly as burrfish. They are part of the family Diodontidae, which includes pufferfish and porcupinefish. Burrfish are known for their ability to inflate their bodies as a defense mechanism against predators. They have a distinctive appearance with spines covering their body, which remain erect when the fish is inflated. In the aquarium, they require a spacious tank with plenty of hiding places and a diet that includes hard-shelled foods to help wear down their ever-growing teeth. They can be aggressive towards smaller tank mates and are best kept with larger, non-aggressive fish.
