Common name: Black Coral

Scientific name: Cirrhipathes

Cirrhipathes is a genus of corals known commonly as Black Coral or Wire Coral. These corals are unique in that they possess a dark, chitinous skeleton, which is where the name 'Black Coral' originates. They are often found in deep water environments but some species can adapt to shallower reef aquariums. Cirrhipathes species are known for their long, wire-like branches that can add a dramatic structure to any reef tank. They host a variety of marine life, offering shelter and habitat to small fish and invertebrates. In the wild, they form symbiotic relationships with certain types of algae, which can also occur in a well-maintained aquarium.
