Genus
Common name: Chalice Coral
Scientific name: Echinophyllia
Echinophyllia, commonly known as Chalice Corals, are a genus of large polyp stony corals (LPS) popular in the reefkeeping hobby for their vibrant colors and unique growth patterns. They are known for their distinctive plating and encrusting forms, which can add dramatic structure to a reef aquarium. Chalice Corals are generally hardy, but they do require stable water conditions and moderate lighting to thrive. They can exhibit a variety of colors, including greens, blues, pinks, and purples, often with contrasting lines or spots. These corals benefit from occasional feeding of planktonic foods and benefit from a lower flow environment to allow them to fully extend their polyps.
