Genus
Common name: Brittle Stars
Scientific name: Ophiomastix
Ophiomastix is a genus of echinoderms belonging to the family Ophiocomidae, commonly known as brittle stars or serpent stars. These invertebrates are characterized by their long, slender arms which they use for locomotion and feeding. They are an excellent addition to the reef aquarium due to their scavenging habits, helping to keep the substrate clean by consuming detritus and uneaten food. They are generally nocturnal and hide during the day. Ophiomastix species are also known for their interesting behaviors and can be quite hardy in a well-established aquarium.
