Genus
Common name: Camel shrimp
Scientific name: Rhynchocinetes
Rhynchocinetes is a genus of shrimp known for their unique hinged carapace, which allows their rostrum to move up and down, resembling a camel's hump, hence the name 'Camel shrimp'. These active and colorful crustaceans are popular in the reef aquarium hobby for their interesting behavior and ability to clean detritus and leftover food. They are nocturnal and often hide during the day, emerging at night to feed. While generally peaceful, they can be opportunistic feeders and may nip at small-polyped stony corals or soft corals, so caution is advised when introducing them to a reef tank.
